Beauty Pageant ContestThis creative beauty pageant contest is a great fundraiser idea. It gets the entire school community involved, is great fun and a wonderful leadership opportunity as well for the student government group. How It Works Ideally, the student government of the middle school or high school can be in charge of organizing the logistics for this fundraiser idea. Up to 10 people (boys and/or girls) can compete for the title of "Mr." or "Ms." (name of school) through this event (for example, Mr. Sunset High School or Ms. Riverdale Middle School). During school lunch hours or at an assembly, the students can "compete" with their chosen talent. Your school can decide if the "talent" is real or funny, i.e. spoofed. Ideas we've heard of have range from lip syncing, break dancing, reading poetry, goose calling (seriously!) or whatever the kids can come up with. Students are given the opportunity to "donate" to the contestant of their choice using their nickels, dimes, dollars. Typically, the donations are collected in the office (where an adult can keep an eye on things.) It is an easy idea to use clean milk gallon containers set in various locations (with adult supervision) to give students adequate opportunities to make their donation and vote for their candidate of choice. You can even involve the larger community in the contest (parents, teachers, grandparents, etc.) to increase your profits. After a specified amount of time (usually no more than 2 weeks) a winner is determined. Whatever contestant has the most amount donated in their name "wins" the contest. Other Ideas Remember to include details of the contest in your school newsletter, website and other modes of communication. Contact the local media (print, tv and radio) and pitch the idea about this fundraiser. Even though at times it doesn't feel like it, the media does like positive and "feel good" types of stories. They might just come and cover your school's creative idea. A fun end to this effort is to announce the winner of the "beauty pageant contest" at a basketball or football game at halftime. The great thing about this fundraiser idea is that it can be used to raise money for the school or a charity of the students' choice. It's a win-win and really fun for everyone involved!
